Yellowstone, Day 1

Today we woke up really early (well not too early because as you may know if you have children, if you want to wake up early they sleep in), and we went to Jellystone! You need to drive through portions of Grand Teton to get to Yellowstone, so it took us a little but it was good that we left early. We experienced first-hand what it is like to be behind a big white butt (AKA a really slow RV).
Once in the park we made a quick stop at Geyser Basin. A really awesome path around some cool geological wonders. I was shocked at how un-roped off the geological wonders were. The entire time Joel (big) and I were in Iceland we kept telling the Icelandic people, “you would not be able to go up to a geyser in America, we would have it roped off 300 ft for legal reasons.” Boy, were we wrong. The wonders were right there. Also present, Japanese tour busses.

We had a great time walking around, and then got back in the car. We decided to make it as far north as possible. It took us many hours, but we made it to Roosevelt Cabin. I was very worried prior to this trip about the traffic. Everyone told me it could take 3 hours to go 1 mile. They were right! But, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. Our major traffic jams were caused by massive bison crossing the road. It was quite funny actually, we are driving north with probably 1,800 other tourists and we see 1 bison on the road, sleeping (or lounging) under a tree. You would think we struck gold. Everyone pulls over and takes 8 million photos. Little did we know… 1 mile away are two bison, crossing the road (jokes ensue). Ten miles away are 50 bison crossing the road (big traffic jam), and 15 miles away are 500 bison crossing the road. Awesome!

Guess what I had for lunch, Bison! Roosevelt Lodge was awesome for eating. It was far north away from the popular entrances, so we were able to get a seat in 10 minutes, and it was gourmet! I am not kidding, delicious food. I had pulled-bison sandwich. Joel (little) had sustainable burger – whatever that means… Joel (big) had the same as me! Afterwards back in the car, and on our way down south back to Lake Lodge.
On the trip back we actually made stops, to the Falls, Sulphur pits (not sure that is what they were called, but what they smelled like), and the black cauldron/mud pits. Lots of fun to watch bubbling hot mud. The kiddo slept a lot on the way up, but not so much on the way back down… Too many fun things to see!

A stop at Artists’ Point and some beautiful photos at the waterfall later, and we are on our way to our humble abode for the evening. We are staying at Lake Hotel. Originally I could only get the Lake Cabins, but – always call the week before for any last minute cancellations – and you will get upgraded to Lake Hotel! Beautiful, old, quaint, adorable. Large hallways, creaky. Big dining room, and lobby. Room for card players and such. A string quartet in the lobby with the lake view in the background was almost Titanic-like, but I still enjoyed it! Only down part, a queen bed for us… And a too-small bathroom to stow the pack n play…

A grand dinner at Lake Hotel… And we hope shortly to be dreaming of another day in the park. Tomorrow, the famous Old Faithful!
