Joel Andrew, if you ever drive me crazy, are really bad, do something terrible (not law breaking terrible but ruining my house terrible) - then you can point to this post to redeem yourself. You were so, so good on our way home from Rochester, that I can't believe it. You are four, and you were patient, YOU helped to keep Mommy calm. You asked how you could help. You never once whined, you never once cried. You said please and thank you. You really are an angel.
I had to wake you up that morning, as you were sleeping in from party, party night the night before. We went to cousin Jenny's wedding. You were sound asleep in the bed and when you woke up you told me you were sad to leave the hotel and sad to leave Ama and Grumpy. "But we get to go on a plane!" I noted. Off we went, taking the hotel van to the airport. We checked in, got through security fine. You held the table nicely while I got us McDonald's breakfast, twice in one weekend... lucky! We relaxed, called Auntie Jennie and then eventually made our way to the gate.
At the gate I saw it, "DELAYED." Which, cannot be good seeing as we only had a 45 minute layover in Newark, and we needed to be home by 5:30 in New Hampshire to pick up James from Daycare as Daddy was in Iceland and would be no help. I knew this was an issue right away but none of the other passengers seemed to mind. I called the airline, as naturally no one was behind the counter. The airline confirmed, not only were we delayed 50 minutes, but that piece of information had to be incorrect as our plane had not even boarded to leave it's destination and was marked as being delayed 2 hours. Ouch. All other flights from Newark to Boston were on standby, the person on the phone searched all other airlines to Manchester, Boston, Portland Maine even and nothing. We were going to be stuck somewhere, for at least the whole day, possible again tonight - there was no way we were getting home to James by 5:30. Unless.
All while Mommy is figuring this out, you sat quietly with Pluto and played. You never once interrupted. Mommy booked the car, and you sat in line after line - get our tickets refunded. Get the car ordered. You were so good. We ran to the little car, met with Ama and Grumpy and you sat by yourself in the back seat for an 8 hour drive home. You were so good the whole time. Mommy did not stop for lunch until 2:30 because she wanted to get as far to James as possible. You got yourself snacks, played games, and watched movies. You talked to Mommy about the cows outside the window, and the other cars. You rested (but didn't sleep). At the rest stop you devoured two slices of pizza, asked politely if we could play the crane game again, again we lost... And then you got back into the car without a peep.
Only 30 minutes from home did you ask how long until we get there. You were an angel the whole day. Thank you for being the best boy a Mommy could ever dream of.
